License

Copyright is a legal fiction that creates a type of property out of something near infinitely reproducible for the purpose of allowing people to afford the time and energy to create new things.

Some people abuse copyright: they fight any attempt to reuse it, take people to court over little things, etc. Unlike trademark, copyright doesn’t require this for protections to stand, so people who do this are just petty and greedy, or grossly misinformed on what copyright actually forbids and allows.

I license my stuff in a very liberal way that favors remixing and new creations over maximizing profit. My hope is enough people appreciate that to allow me to keep doing this.

This license is for monthly/yearly Patreon supporters only. If you got it somewhere else, the license it came with applies. If you got it somewhere without paying, you really ought to become a supporter if you’re able. Supporters get most things before anyone else, and it’s a cheap way to clear your conscience.

The gist is that you can use what I make to bolster your own creations. You can always ask for clarification if you’re unsure and I’ll try to make it more clear here.

Here are some specific guidelines, but the general policy is paramount: if you produce something that’s more of you than me, it’s probably okay.

The goal here is to give examples of acceptable and unacceptable uses. Most of this is restating the fair use tests and isn’t strictly necessary for most cases, but clarity is always nice. I mostly just clarify that, yes, you can charge money if your use is truly transformative.

Music

What you can do:

Use tracks in monetized streams, use tracks as background music for your games (even if you charge for them), slice tracks up and remix them to create dynamic music in your games.

What you can’t do:

Redistribute them (except as part of your larger unique work), sell them separately (like in a soundtack album).

Visual Art

What you can’t do:

Redistribute them (except as part of your larger unique work), sell them separately (like as prints).

Assets

Stuff like 3D models and synth presets.

What you can do:

For 3D models, you can charge for the cost of the print and the cost of your time and investment in tools if you print them, especially as part of a larger project like building blocks for a TTRPG map. You can use them to build 3D worlds (VR, games) you charge for.

What you can’t do:

Redistribute them (except as part of your larger unique work), sell them separately (like as 3D prints).
